Preparing for the blaze: Kelowna’s fire hazard on the rise

In the past 20 years, fire in the area has become a much more pervasive and terrifying force for residents, firefighters and environmental experts to grapple with, influencing how all are thinking about summer preparedness. A seasonal hazard has turned into a chronic catastrophe driven by hotter temperatures and dry conditions, and by climate patterns that have moved farther eastward across B.C.’s interior. The city’s distinctive geography makes it especially vulnerable during wildfire season. Dry vegetation can transform a spark from a lightning strike or human activity into a fast-moving and uncontrollable blaze that threatens homes, blocks transportation and pollutes the air.
